ROCHESTER, Minn. – More Than Conquerors is a new boxing program being offered for kids and young adults in the Rochester area.
It’s safe to say that the program is a hit.
What started in the garage of founder Tierre Webster, has turned into an outlet for young people in the community.
“We kind of have this slogan, “More Than.” It’s a biblical thought; more than conquerors. We want the kids here to know that we’re more than, everything in their life they can be more than,” explains Webster.
His vision for the program, which focuses on faith, family, fitness and future, is to create a space where kids and young adults can come to build confidence and relationships with positive adult role models.
“With 1 in 3 homes operating without biological fathers in the home; 2 in 3 African-Americans, 1 in 3 Latinos, and 1 in 4 Caucasian we’re trying to kind of counter that. You see that happening here, that speaks to the “family” piece.”
More Than Conquerors recently moved into a gym in the Rochester Family YMCA, but the plan is to expand as much as possible.
“We have a site here and then in the mobile park in town as well,” adds Webster. “We want to reach the community if we can, and we can’t do that alone, it’s going to take the community to be able to reach the community.”
Working to change the futures of at-risk youth, while providing an alternative to traditional sports… you could call it a one-two punch of support and sparing.
“[They] teach us well, make us feel better,” says Mark Martinez a young man apart of the program. “I really like it, it’s very important to me because boxing is my heart.”
